Ahead of Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, New York State Representative Paul Tonko wants to take action on the abundance of sports betting ads. Most recently, it introduced the "Betting on Our Future Act," which bans all online and electronic sports betting ads in New York and across the country if the law is passed.
Empire State is one of the U.S. jurisdictions that operates the online sports betting market, and it is expected to generate a large amount of betting with the upcoming Super Bowl weekend. However, easy access to sports betting may also be detrimental to locals, as the state reports a recent rise in cases of obsessive gambling among young adults.
Talking about his bill, Mr. Tonko explained that millions of American families will be watching the show over the weekend, exposing themselves to tons of sports betting ads by operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel and others. He explained that there will be numerous ads promoting 'risk-free' or 'sweatless' bets in an attempt to get more customers.
He went on to say that since the Supreme Court decriminalized sports betting, these unregulated ads have been running wild, with betting brands spending billions of dollars to make sure they reach every TV screen across the country. According to him, these advertisements pose a particularly dangerous threat to teenagers and young people who are unaware of the potential gambling risks.
His bill was inspired by the federal Tobacco Labeling and Advertising Act, which took effect in 1966. Mr Tonko added that excessive promotion of uncensored websites must be curbed. According to him, if passed by law, the bill would halt dangerous practices and send a strong message to online sports betting companies.
In addition, Rep. Lee supported his position in a recent report released by the National Problem Gambling Helpline Network. Demand for this increased 45% in 2021, with sports betting companies spending $500 million on advertising in 2020 and 60-80% of high school students taking part in gambling for money, according to the organization.
Another worrisome finding was recently published by the New York Committee on Problem Gambling. Earlier this month, the organization said there was an increase in compulsive gambling among adolescents between 18 and 24. According to this committee, people in this range are now pathological gamblers.
Local lawmakers are also concerned about the impact of gambling ads on Empire State residents. In mid-January 2023, Democrats Lewis R. Sepulveda and Leroy Comley introduced legislation requiring all gambling and sports betting ads in the state to include warnings about possible negative impacts and numbers on problem gambling hotlines.
