Zhuhai city in mainland China's Guangdong province is trying to get a bigger say in the local conferences, incentives, conferences and exhibition (MICE) industry. Authorities in the city, which adjoins Macau, have announced bids for a land site near the Zhuhai landing site on the Hong Kong-Zuhai-Macao bridge. The site is for hotels and exhibition centers, the South China Morning Post newspaper reported.
The Zhuhai government announced on Oct. 9 that bids will begin for the 226,000-square-meter (2.43 million-square-foot) site north of Zhuhai port. The package will go up for auction on Oct. 18, with a starting price of 5.64 billion yuan ($793 million), Hong Kong-based media outlets said.
The site is the largest to be earmarked for hotels and exhibition spaces in Zhuhai in recent years, the newspaper reported, citing Vincent Cheng, managing director of consultancy Vincon Consulting and Evaluation. The news follows the Chinese government's announcement in February of a development strategy for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Taiwan region.
The Taiwan Strait refers to China's central government plan to integrate the economy and people of mainland China's Guangdong province with those of Macau and Hong Kong. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (pictured), a component of the Taiwan Strait plan, opened in October.
According to media reports on Tuesday, the Zhuhai land bid includes several conditions, including the successful bidder having to sign a letter of intent to acquire with at least one global resort brand. Bidders must also attract at least 20 foreign companies and develop at least two hotel projects within three years.
The Macau government identified the MICE business as one of the factors to help the country diversify its economy. Several casino operators in Macau invested in expanding their capacity to accommodate conferences and exhibitions.
Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd. is currently developing the so-called Phase 3 of its flagship property, Galaxy Macao, which will be a large arena for 16,000 seats and 400,000 square feet of MICE events.
A total of 1,427 MICE events were held in Macau in 2018, up 3.3% from the previous year, according to data from the Macau Statistical Office. The statistics office said the number of attendees at the event rose 11.6% during the period, exceeding 2.12 million.
The outline plan for the Taiwan region also noted that it would develop Hengchen, part of mainland China's territory adjacent to Macau, as a "high-level international leisure and tourism island" to complete Macau's development into a global tourism and leisure hub.
With the idea of creating two central holidays featuring Hung-chien and Macau, many non-game tourism projects already exist in Hung-chien and many more are planned.
