Macau's Civil Aviation Administration (AACM) has approved additional scheduled flights to Beijing and Ningbo in mainland China starting in late April. Starting in July, it will allow some additional services to existing and new regional routes, as well as to coincide with the school's summer holiday season. The information was in an update from AACM on Monday.
Starting on Apr. 25, China Southern Airlines will be able to operate seven flights a week between Macau and Beijing Daxing International Airport, which currently operates three times a week. Other airlines currently operating daily between Macau and the Chinese capital include China Eastern Airlines and local traditional airline Air Macau.
Starting April 28, Air Macau will be able to operate 14 weekly flights serving the Ningbo route. Air Macau is currently the sole operator of the Macau-Ningbo direct flight service, currently offering seven weekly flights.
From July 1, Korean Air will be able to enter the Macau-Seoul service market with seven flights a week. Macau, Jin Air, and Jeju Air each already serve Korea.
In addition, from July 1, Air Macau will be able to increase its Macau-Kuala Lupur route from the current four flights a week to seven flights a week. Currently, the only other airline to provide this service is AirAsia, which operates the route daily.
New regional routes approved include Macau-Clark, Philippines, AirAsia, and Macau-Fukuoka, Japan, from 1 June.
In other news, Macau International Airport handled nearly 1.78 million passengers throughput in the first quarter, according to the airport operator's latest aviation statistics. This was a slight increase from the 1.76 million estimate the airport operator mentioned in the first three months of the year in its late March update.
The first-quarter tally showed a recovery rate of nearly 77% compared with the same period in 2019, when Macau's aviation hub handled throughput of more than 2.33 million passengers.
